So, the weekend is past, but let's catch up on our Weekly 30-20-10 Countdown.
Twenty years ago, beginning with the week ending April 25, 1992, and continuing for another eight weeks, this hip-hop extravaganza was No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100...
It knocked this syrupy classic, belted out by most then-teenage girls in the privacy of their bedrooms, to No. 2, and over the next several weeks, the Williams ballad would continue to fall down the chart and into continuous rotation on Adult Contemporary radio stations everywhere until the end of time. As you probably heard, "Jump" is a totally different animal from "Laid the Guest Real Fast," at least in content.
The song was an international sensation and topped the charts in most countries and was certified double platinum as a single. The Kriss-Kross duo, comprised of Chris "Mac Daddy" Kelly and Chris "Daddy Mac" Smith (get the name now? Clever, huh?), was only 12- and 13-years-old when this was recorded, and it was the single off their first studio album...(ready for it; we love puns around here, but we're not sure we love this pun)...Totally Krossed Out.
It has since gained great retrospective acclaim, except from this writer, who considers it one of the 100 Worst Songs Ever. The duo itself continued to have success throughout the early to mid-nineties, but their star seems to have faded into the ether. Or did it jump into the ether? Not sure.
Kelly and Smith were known for their fashion sense, BTW.
They wore their clothes backwards.
Lock that one away in your Treasure Trove of Pointless Trivia.
